Schiff Theorem and the Electric Dipole Moments of Hydrogen-Like Atoms
The Schiff theorem is revisited in this work and the residual - and
-odd electron--nucleus interaction, after the shielding takes effect, is
completely specified. An application is made to the electric dipole moments of
hydrogen-like atoms, whose qualitative features and systematics have important

Two-species mixture of quantum degenerate Bose and Fermi gases
We have produced a macroscopic quantum system in which a Li-6 Fermi sea
coexists with a large and stable Na-23 Bose-Einstein condensate. This was
accomplished using inter-species sympathetic cooling of fermionic Li-6 in a
thermal bath of bosonic Na-23
Phase separation of Bose-Einstein condensates
The zero-temperature system of two dilute overlapping Bose-Einstein
condensates is unstable against long wavelength excitations if the interaction
strength between the distinguishable bosons exceeds the geometric mean of the
like-boson interaction strengths. If the condensates attract each other, the
instability is similar to the instability of the negative scattering length
condensates. If the condensates repel, they separate spatially into condensates
of equal pressure. We estimate the boundary size, surface tension and energy of
the phase separated condensate system and we discuss the implications for

Atomic Electric Dipole Moments: The Schiff Theorem and Its Corrections
Searches for the permanent electric dipole moments (EDMs) of diamagnetic
atoms provide powerful probes of CP-violating hadronic and semileptonic
interactions. The theoretical interpretation of such experiments, however,
requires careful implementation of a well-known theorem by Schiff that implies
a vanishing net EDM for an atom built entirely from point-like, nonrelativistic
constituents that interact only electrostatically. Any experimental observation
of a nonzero atomic EDM would result from corrections to the point-like,
nonrelativistic, electrostatic assumption. We reformulate Schiff's theorem at
the operator level and delineate the electronic and nuclear operators whose
atomic matrix elements generate corrections to "Schiff screening". We obtain a
form for the operator responsible for the leading correction associated with
finite nuclear size -- the so-called "Schiff moment" operator -- and observe
that it differs from the corresponding operator used in previous Schiff moment
computations. We show that the more general Schiff moment operator reduces to
the previously employed operator only under certain approximations that are not
generally justified. We also identify other corrections to Schiff screening
that may not be included properly in previous theoretical treatments. We
discuss practical considerations for obtaining a complete computation of

Analysis of road traffic crashes in the State of Qatar
Road traffic crashes (RTCs) are globally acknowledged as increasing threat to society, because they can affect many lives when they result in severe injury or fatality. In the State of Qatar RTCs are getting more awareness and attention, aiming to improve the traffic safety in the country. This study is an exploratory research providing different analyses of the crash data for seven consecutive years, ranging from 2010 to 2016, which is obtained from the Traffic Department in the Ministry of Interior for the State of Qatar. The objectives aim to evaluate the trend of RTC rate over time and create understanding of the influencing factors related to RTC frequency. Time series analyses show an increasing trend of RTCs leading to severe injury and a slight decreasing trend for fatal RTCs. Secondly, different RTC severity levels are related to diverse RTC causes. Furthermore, the results revealed that crashes with severe injuries or fatality for drivers as well as pedestrians are found to be significantly affected by seasonal weather variations, with the highest vulnerability in winter and autumn season. Stationary solutions of the one-dimensional nonlinear Schroedinger equation: II. Case of attractive nonlinearity
All stationary solutions to the one-dimensional nonlinear Schroedinger
equation under box or periodic boundary conditions are presented in analytic
form for the case of attractive nonlinearity. A companion paper has treated the
repulsive case. Our solutions take the form of bounded, quantized, stationary
trains of bright solitons. Among them are two uniquely nonlinear classes of
nodeless solutions, whose properties and physical meaning are discussed in
detail. The full set of symmetry-breaking stationary states are described by
the character tables from the theory of point groups. We make
experimental predictions for the Bose-Einstein condensate and show that, though
these are the analog of some of the simplest problems in linear quantum

Investigations of Ra properties to test possibilities of new optical frequency standards
The present work tests the suitability of the narrow transitions $7s \
^2S_{1/2} \to 6d ^2D_{3/2}7s ^2S_{1/2} \to 6d ^2D_{5/2}^+6d^+$ to be considered as a potential
candidate for an atomic clock. This is further corroborated by our studies of
the hyperfine interactions, dipole and quadrupole polarizabilities and

Auxiliary field approach to dilute Bose gases with tunable interactions
We rewrite the Lagrangian for a dilute Bose gas in terms of auxiliary fields
related to the normal and anomalous condensate densities. We derive the loop
expansion of the effective action in the composite-field propagators. The
lowest-order auxiliary field (LOAF) theory is a conserving mean-field
approximation consistent with the Goldstone theorem without some of the
difficulties plaguing approximations such as the Hartree and Popov
approximations. LOAF predicts a second-order phase transition. We give a set of
Feynman rules for improving results to any order in the loop expansion in terms
of composite-field propagators. We compare results of the LOAF approximation
with those derived using the Popov approximation. LOAF allows us to explore the
critical regime for all values of the coupling constant and we determine
various parameters in the unitarity limit.Comment: 16 pages, 7 figure
Microscopic Dynamics in a Strongly Interacting Bose-Einstein Condensate
An initially stable 85Rb Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) was subjected to a
carefully controlled magnetic field pulse in the vicinity of a Feshbach
resonance. This pulse probed the strongly interacting regime for the
condensate, with calculated values for the diluteness parameter (na^3) ranging
from 0.01 to 0.5. The field pulse was observed to cause loss of atoms from the
condensate on remarkably short time scales (>=10 microsec). The dependence of
this loss on magnetic field pulse shape and amplitude was measured. For
triangular pulses shorter than 1 ms, decreasing the pulse length actually
increased the loss, until extremely short time scales (a few tens of
microseconds) were reached. Such time scales and dependencies are very
different from those expected in traditional condensate inelastic loss
